Kate "Puck" Connolly is the female protagonist. She has won the Scorpio Races once, and was the first woman who rode in them. She has two brothers, Gabe and Finn.
Biography[]
Puck used to live with her younger brother, Finn, her older brother, Gabe, and her parents. They were a quiet family, friendlier among themselves than with the rest of the island. Puck and Finn used to sometimes race each other to the beach, her on Dove and him in the car.
The autumn prior to the start of the novel, Puck's parents were killed by a capall uisce while they were out fishing, leaving Puck and her brothers to fend for themselves. Puck and Finn earn money by painting teapots for tourists and making cookies for the local shops. Sometimes they struggle for money and only have beans to eat.
At the start of the novel, Puck and Finn are the ones to spot that the capaill uisce are returning, signalling the start of the race season, after they raced each other to the beach for the first time in nearly a year (Finn won).

- "I think, just for that moment, that I hate brothers, because they never realize when something is important to you and they only care about their own things."
hello.
Gabe[]
Puck gets slightly infuriated, and entranced, when Finn and Gabe communicate in their own "unspoken language". She hates it when Gabe has to clean fish as it makes the whole house smell.
I feel a sudden surge of fierce pride that he is my
brother. (Gabe)
A smile walks over one side of his face but not the other. It almost looks like he’s actually happy, if you’ve never seen one of his real ones. The sad thing is this — I’ve gotten
used to this fake one. I’ve become willing to wait for the real one to reappear, without realizing I should’ve been working hard to find it again.
